Our community work goes beyond the doors of our UC House. At our local neighborhood schools, Fairwood Alternative Elementary and Ohio Avenue Elementary, we strive to serve in ways that support teachers, parents, and students.
Tutoring – In partnership with Columbus Tutoring Initiative, we recruit and oversee tutors at both elementary schools. At Fairwood, Grange Insurance partners to provide enough tutors for every 3rd grader to have a reading tutor! At Ohio Avenue, we are still recruiting, but consistently have tutored 5-15 students each year.
Care Packages – we support the 3rd graders during testing week by providing small care packages that include snacks, fun pencils, erasers, stickers, and encouraging notes. We take donations for this project in March and April.
Teachers – We have worked at Ohio Avenue to provide Professional Development in team-building, conflict resolution, and communication. We have also offered teacher retreats for those who are interested in a faith-based day of restoration.
Support Groups – We have provided, as needed, various support services to students. This includes grief support, and new this year is a support group for students whose lives are impacted by incarceration in their immediate families.
